Your First Muay Thai Class in Bangkok: What to Expect and What to Bring

Booked your first Muay Thai class in Bangkok and not sure what will happen? Here is exactly what a beginner class at Muay Thai Academy MTA looks like, what to bring, and how to get the most out of your first session.

What happens in a Muay Thai class

Most group classes follow the same structure. Your coach adjusts the level for you, so you never need to keep up with the fighters on day one.

  • Warm-up: skipping rope, running or light movement to get your body ready.
  • Stretching: hips, legs and shoulders – kicks and knees need mobility.
  • Shadow boxing: you practise the stance, guard and basic strikes in front of the mirror.
  • Pad work: rounds with a Thai coach holding pads. This is where you learn the most.
  • Bag work: kicks, knees, punches and elbows on the heavy bag.
  • Conditioning: push-ups, sit-ups and core work to finish.

What to bring

  • Comfortable training clothes: shorts and a T-shirt or tank top. Most people train barefoot.
  • Water and a small towel – Bangkok is hot and you will sweat a lot.
  • Hand wraps and gloves if you have them. If not, you can buy them at Super Export Shop right next to the gym – MTA students get 10% off.
  • A change of clothes. We have clean showers and lockers.

Tips for your first session

  • Arrive 10 minutes early. Classes start on time, and if you arrive more than 15 minutes late you cannot join the session.
  • Eat light. Have a small meal 1–2 hours before training, not right before.
  • Go at your own pace. Tell your coach it is your first class – they will slow down and correct your technique.
  • Breathe out when you strike. It keeps you relaxed and gives you more power.
  • Come back soon. Your second and third classes are when things start to click.

Which class should a beginner choose?

Every group class welcomes beginners. If you prefer a calmer start, join our evening beginner class (Mon – Fri, 6:30 – 7:30 PM). If you want faster progress, book a private session with one of our Thai coaches – one-to-one training is the quickest way to learn the right technique from the start.

Group classes are ฿500 per class, and private training is ฿1,500 per hour. See all prices and times on our homepage.
